Chapter Nineteen
“If it wasn’t for all the security measures, this place would be truly idyllic.” Zoem glanced around them, where they stood with a forest surrounding them on three sides and vast plains running east all the way to the distant chain of mountains.
Neenja snorted. “I’ll say.” She put down their bags on the gravel path leading up to the log cabin Zoem had learned she had been building on ever since the Pathfinder arrived at Gemocon.
A large forestry machine sat at the edge of the wood. Zoem knew what it was only because she had seen some like it in action on Oconodos when the people holding her hostage were adding to their jungle compounds. Lasers would cut the trees down and strip off the bark, and the machine would either make planks or lift entire trunks into place.
“It’s amazing that you’ve worked that machine so much in such a short time.” Zoem motioned toward the cabin, which was larger than she had anticipated, but still small compared to some of the new structures on Gemocon.
“I find building something rather cathartic,” Neenja said. “Once you get into a routine, it is good for the brain. I’ve solved a lot of issues while cutting down trees and working on my blueprints.”
“Issues such as how to deal with me,” Zoem said, unhappy that she’d ever caused trouble for anyone, let alone Neenja.
“Sometimes. But I do confess, since you started communicating, I haven’t even been here. Good thing that my subordinates thought of sending food with us, since what I have in there is bound to have expired.”
Zoem didn’t like the fact that she’d kept Neenja from staying at her house either, but it was the reality they lived in right now. They all made sacrifices, and hers would be massive: logical, necessary, and vital. She wiggled her shoulders, trying to shake the somber thoughts from her system. Four days had gone by since the meeting when they’d put on the cuffs and she’d had to let them know her plan to deal with the Nestrocalder terrorist threat.
“It’s getting dark,” Neenja said quickly, perhaps thinking of the same thing.
It hadn’t taken Zoem more than a minute to realize that Neenja was not dealing well with the inevitable outcome of her plan. It took a lot of energy to act casual, but no doubt it was even more difficult for Neenja. Zoem could only try to imagine how she would panic if the situation were reversed.
Zoem wasn’t a telepath, let alone an oracle, but she could sense Neenja’s wild inner protests. Once everyone in Adina’s office had calmed down, Neenja had pulled herself together, and Zoem couldn’t feel the rampaging emotions rolling in waves from her like she had only moments ago.
Now as they walked up the path to the log cabin, Neenja seemed collected and very professional. If Zoem hadn’t gotten to know Neenja, she would have figured something else was causing the slight tic in the outer corner of her left eye and her thinly pressed lips, perhaps something that had nothing to do with her.
